The development and application of thermal barrier coatings is largely driven by technological, economic and societal pressures to increase turbine
efficiency by operating them at increasingly higher temperatures. This improves fuel efficiency and therefore contributes to a more environmentally-friendly
life cycle of turbine engines.
With the view to enabling more highly-insulating and resilient TBCs, there are a number of different TBC materials and complex TBC structures that can be
used to protect structural components from the demanding conditions found in aircraft, diesel and industrial gas turbine engines.
