Resilient Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs)

Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) provide an essential protective coating layer for engineering products and components that operate in extreme environments eg turbine engines.

TBCs act to:
  • Protect against wear and micro-cracking
  • Prevent oxidation and corrosion
  • Minimise thermal degradation
  • Provide thermal insulation
  • Provide a lubricating surface
  • Reduce maintenance costs
  • Improve fuel efficiency by allowing higher burn temperatures


The development and application of thermal barrier coatings is largely driven by technological, economic and societal pressures to increase turbine efficiency by operating them at increasingly higher temperatures. This improves fuel efficiency and therefore contributes to a more environmentally-friendly life cycle of turbine engines.

With the view to enabling more highly-insulating and resilient TBCs, there are a number of different TBC materials and complex TBC structures that can be used to protect structural components from the demanding conditions found in aircraft, diesel and industrial gas turbine engines.

4YSZ is one of the preferred materials for the application of topcoat TBCs and Innovnano’s nanostructured 4YSZ powders have the structural and chemical properties to produce thermal barrier coatings with lower thermal conductivity at high temperatures.
